Symptoms indicating a magnesium deficiency

Today, there are different types of disease, disorders, deficiencies, and abnormalities all around the world. Most of us have already come to terms with the same and are leading lives to the best of our abilities as we take care of ourselves. However, most of the times it is difficult for us to understand when a particular symptom shows up. We could be experiencing a fever just because it is the flu season or it could be fever which is a symptom for the start of a deadly disease. We very easily ignore symptoms such as common cold and take medicines which are self-prescribed. We blame the pains we experience on some object we carried or some kind of stress we are going through as most of the times, it seems very simple and going all the way to the doctor doesn’t seem worth the effort.

A lot of times, these simple symptoms are indications to a much serious underlying condition that we don’t pay attention to. Hence, it is important to be able to understand why different kinds of symptoms might arise and respond to these symptoms as soon as possible. Magnesium deficiency shows symptoms which are commonly seen too. One study suggests that almost about 75% of the population doesn’t meet their daily magnesium requirements. Some of the symptoms experienced through this deficiency are:

  • High blood pressure:  It has been observed through various studies that a deficiency of magnesium in the body is capable of increasing the blood pressure and that this could further lead to heart disease. Although there isn’t a direct study conducted in humans to prove the fact that its lack increases blood pressure, studies have shown that consumption of the right amount of magnesium can keep a check on the blood pressure.
  • Irregular rhythm of heart : Also known as heart arrhythmia, this is one of the most severe symptoms caused by the deficiency of magnesium in the body. While it is usually mild in the case of most people, some people may also observe pauses in between their heartbeats which are commonly known as heart palpitations. This condition leads to further symptoms of its own such as pain in the chest, shortness of breath, lightheadedness, fainting, etc. In the worst case, this symptom could further lead to increasing the risk of stroke or even heart failure.
  • Muscle cramps or twitches : This is one of the most common things that people go through and this is a symptom of magnesium deficiency. In the worst case, this symptom can even build up to seizures or convulsions. Usually, in normal cases, consuming supplements of magnesium should be helpful in reducing these cramps and continuous muscle twitches. However, the resolution of the problem isn’t that easy in the older adults and better solutions are being researched upon. If the symptom persists, it would be advised to visit the doctor.
