Home remedies to get rid of head lice

Lice are every parents’ nightmare. These little creatures can create havoc for your children and can be quite embarrassing too. Additionally, the child is also quite uncomfortable and would constantly need to keep scratching their head. However, here are some home remedies that can help you to get rid of head lice that have invaded the scalp of your child.

Vinegar
Applying distilled vinegar to the affected scalp can be a gentle way to get rid of the hair lice. You can apply it, then leave it on for a while, followed by washing it thoroughly with water. Using apple cider vinegar is quite a good option as well. If it does not work, then you can combine the solution with salt for effectively removing the lice.

Olive oil and tea tree oil
Oils are important for maintaining the health of your hair. So, it is only natural that some type of oil may act as a way to combat one of the worst enemies of your child’s scalp and hair. Hence, you can try out applying olive oil, which will leave no space for the lice to breathe and use tea tree oil by mixing it with water for effective results.

Petroleum jelly
Lice are known to be notorious and keep roaming around the whole of the scalp at all times. Applying a thick layer of petroleum jelly on your child’s hair would help in stopping them from moving around. So, you can apply this layer and then cover your child’s head with a towel by leaving it overnight. In the morning, you can apply baby oil gently and then remove the eggs and lice with the help of a baby comb.

Garlic and onion juice
The smell of garlic and onion is as overwhelming for head lice as it is for us humans. You can blend cloves of garlic into the lime juice and then apply it on the scalp, followed by leaving it for half an hour. As for onion juice, you can keep it for three to four hours and repeat it twice to thrice a week. This can be followed by using nit combs to remove the eggs and the lice.

Hairdryers
We do not recommend using a hair dryer for a toddler. However, you can use this for slightly older kids. You should not try this remedy in the house as the lice may get blown off the head because of the heat and the intensity of the air. They may further fall into the surroundings and spread easily.

Coconut oil
Lastly, trying out coconut oil as a remedy for hair lice would also prove to be quite effective. You can apply it well over your scalp and then go on to cover it with a shower cap. This shower will retain the moisture and you can drive the lice away by using a thin comb.
