Helpful COPD Remedies

Obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is considered a group of diseases that affects the lungs. Three of the main diseases associated with COPD are and refractory (non-reversible) asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis. Emphysema occurs when there is damage to the lung’s air sacs called alveoli. This damage causes air to stay in the lungs making it hard to exhale. Bronchitis is when the bronchioles become inflamed causing mucus to become trapped and breathing very restricted and difficult.

When any of these three conditions last for an extended period of time, they are considered COPD. Doctor-prescribed treatments for COPD include:

  • Corticosteroids that help to reduce inflammation in the lungs.
  • Bronchodilators, which are used to relax the muscles and allow easier breathing.
  • Supplemental oxygen to help bring oxygen to the blood and other areas of the body.
  • An incentive spirometer, as part of oxygen therapy to help strengthen the lungs, and
  • Breathing exercises (i.e., tripod position) to help improve breathing.

In addition to medically-prescribed treatments, the following home remedies may help:

  1. Plants and spices

Alternative health practitioners recommend several plants and spices to lessen COPD symptoms. For instance, eucalyptus oil is often used to break up and lesson phlegm and congestion. Whereas oregano oil works as a natural antihistamine because it contains both rosmarinic acid and carvacrol, which act as decongestants.

  1. Ginger

Ginger in its many forms (i.e., spices, tea, or essential oil) has many perks for COPD patients. As well as a natural energizer, ginger is known to help lessen inflammation and mucus,  in order to naturally open the lungs and clear the airways.

  1. Low sodium diet

While the above mentioned plants and spices work to reduce airway and lung inflammation, salt actually causes increased inflammation and water retention throughout the body, which can exacerbate COPD symptoms. This is why many COPD patients are told to consume a low sodium diet, limiting processed and canned foods, and using natural herbs and spice mixes that contain little to no salt to flavor recipes.

  1. Supplements

Numerous studies indicate that low levels of vitamin D supplements may help reduce COPD symptoms as well as the threat of respiratory infections. Yet several other natural supplements, including l-carnitine, vitamins A and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, are shown to boost muscle strength in the lungs and airways, work as natural anti-inflammatories, and naturally help clear phlegm and improve overall lung function. Just be sure to double check with your healthcare provider first that these supplements don’t contradict with any prescribed medications.

  1. COPD diet

Believe it or not, the foods we consume can both support our lungs and airways or restrict them.  For instance, gas-inducing foods like beans and legumes, soy, onions, and cabbage may lead to bloating and indigestion, which may also impede breathing. At the same time, foods rich in fiber may help relieve bloating and waste to make breathing easier. Doctors also often recommend increasing the consumption of vitamin D, A, and E foods, as well as sources of calcium for added respiratory and auto-immune support.
