Effective home remedies to reduce the effects of a fever

A fever occurs when the body temperature rises higher than the normal range. Although the normal temperature can differ from one person to another, it normally ranges around 98.6 ℉. Having a fever is usually a sign that your body is trying to fight an infection or illness. The rising temperature in the body makes it difficult for the bacteria or viruses to survive. Although it can make you feel miserable, there are a few home remedies, such as the following, to help you reduce the effect of fever.

Remedies to get rid of fever
It cannot be denied that having a fever is an uncomfortable feeling and your body could ache a lot during bouts of fever. Here are some ways by which you may comfort yourself or a loved one or lessen the effect of a fever.

Over-the-counter medicines
Paracetamol and ibuprofen are readily available over-the-counter and are effective for providing relief from fever and its symptoms. If you are unsure about the types of medicines that would be beneficial for you, you can always consult a doctor beforehand. The doctor may also check if you are allergic to certain elements in such medicines and prescribe the ones that can help cure fever and other associated discomforts.

Stay hydrated
Water is a panacea for almost all diseases that exist, and in fact, when you have a fever, you should drink a lot of water and other fluids. This is because when the temperature of the body rises, the body could suffer from dehydration. By drinking liquids like water, the chances of dehydration decrease and, in the process, the temperature of your body cools down.

A right mix of ice packs and cool washcloths
The mix would depend on how high the temperature of the body is. Cool packs and cool washcloths can be used on the person suffering from a fever. While cool packs are applied under the arms, cool washcloths are mostly used on a person’s forehead. It is very important to not overdo the cold compression otherwise the fever may return.

Resting and staying warm
Fighting a fever can be extremely taxing. Your immune system constantly fights back the infection, thereby making you tired and fatigued. Getting adequate rest is the best way to get over the fever.

Sweat it out
It is advisable to consume food items and fluids that can make you sweat. Consumption of cayenne pepper on foods when you have fever could be beneficial. Cayenne contains an element known as capsaicin that not only makes you sweat but also promotes blood circulation.

Using socks to get rid of fever

  • First, insert your feet in hot water and warm them nicely.
  • Soak a pair of thin socks in cold water and wring the water out.
  • Just before going to bed, wear them and put a pair of dry woolen socks over the cotton ones.

This remedy helps in reducing the effect of fever by circulating blood to the feet.
